This strategic move places an experienced leader at the forefront of the league’s expansion and development efforts on the continent.

NBA Africa Welcomes New Leader Clare Akamanzi at the Helm

Akamanzi has a wealth of experience. In her role as CEO of the Rwanda Development Board, she spearheaded high-profile partnerships, including with the NBA Basketball Africa League (BAL), global soccer giants Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, as well as a host of other initiatives to promote sports and economic growth in Rwanda.

Beginning January 23, Akamanzi will take the helm of the NBA Africa ship, directing business partnerships, media rights deals, sponsorships and community initiatives across the continent. She will report directly to Mark Tatum, NBA Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, to lead the NBA’s growth in Africa.

“Claire’s business acumen, international experience and familiarity with basketball and the NBA make her the ideal person to lead our business in Africa,” said Tatum.

Akamanzi shares this optimism and is excited about the opportunities ahead and the positive impact she hopes to have. I have seen firsthand how sports can positively impact businesses, families and communities in Africa, and the NBA and BAL are prime examples,” she said.

Africa has tremendous potential for the NBA, with a passionate fan base and a breeding ground for top talent in the sports world. The NBA already has extensive television coverage on the continent through partnerships with beIN Sports, ESPN, Canal+ Afrique and the South African Broadcasting Corporation, and Akamanzi’s arrival is expected to drive further expansion and engagement, building on the renewal of ESPN’s African rights in 2022.

Akamanzi’s appointment signals the NBA’s strong commitment to Africa. With her leadership, talent and understanding of the continent’s needs, the NBA will not only grow its business, but also empower communities and inspire generations through the unifying power of basketball.
